Therapy for children at Monocacy Therapy

Children

I have effectively treated symptoms of
post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety,
and bipolar disorder in children ages 6 and up.

I specialize in working with children, tweens, and adolescents facing family and life transitions related to military service and other high-stress environments, including divorce, frequent moves, family reintegration, sibling conflict, and school bullying. I help young clients build grounding skills, stay connected to activities they enjoy, and develop confidence in advocating for their needs.

My approach is developmentally responsive and guided by each child’s preferred ways of communicating. Sessions may include time in nature at my small farm in rural Maryland, games, writing, art, movement and dance, child-centered mindfulness practices, and the inclusion of my animals—or clients’ own pets.

Whenever possible, I collaborate closely with parents and other trusted caregivers, learning about your family’s background and parenting approach and offering practical guidance to strengthen connection, set healthy boundaries, and advocate effectively for your child’s needs at school and at home.

Therapy for couples and families at Monocacy Therapy

Couples & families

When working with couples and families, I focus on creating an environment of mutual respect, where each family member, whatever their age or unique abilities, participates.

Informed by emotionally focused and family systems approaches, I specialize in helping couples and families navigating trauma, high-stress work environments, and major life transitions—such as military service, deployment and reintegration, displacement, and caregiving demands. I focus on identifying communication and attachment patterns shaped by chronic stress and trauma, and work collaboratively with clients to build practical, relationship-strengthening strategies tailored to their family’s needs. Clients often share that they feel more at ease in sessions, leave with concrete tools they can use right away, and gain a renewed sense of connection and resilience in their relationships.

Therapy for adults at Monocacy Therapy

Adults

I have worked with adults of various ages, from 20-somethings to 80-somethings.

I work with adults who are living with the effects of complex trauma, post-traumatic stress, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety—particularly when these concerns are shaped by military or public-service work, humanitarian and crisis response, and migration or displacement.

I support clients in using their core values, cultural and spiritual beliefs, and existing strengths to navigate major life transitions such as launching new careers, leaving home, becoming parents, relocating for military or public-service roles, retirement from public service, and adjusting to immigration-related changes.

My trauma-informed, skills-based approach draws from evidence-based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure-based interventions, and mindfulness to help clients reduce symptoms, build stability, and move toward meaningful personal and professional goals. I am trained in a range of complementary therapeutic methods, including:

My patients have noticed that I am open to feedback and willing to change my strategy when needed or desired. I view individual therapy as an evolving process that can—and should—transform along with you and your goals.
